Concrete Class and Workshop for AWA+D

April 25, 2015

VerteX design studio’s first concrete workshop for AWA+D was today and finished hours ago.
We covered the GFRC technique on the triangle coffee table.
Thank AWA+D for making this happen and keep tune for other series of concrete workshops here at VerteX design studio.

On this workshop, we were talking about the mix and the technique of the GFRC which is in 4 basic stages.

1- Mold.

Making the mold is the most important part of this concrete fabrication.

We use melamine and LDF core sheets because of the fact that melamine won’t stick to concrete and easy to de-mold.

On making the mold, you need to secure the melamine form with enough screws and detail to support the weight of concrete.

Silicone the corner to prevent water penetration to the mold and having a round corner.

2- Face coat.

Face coat is the mix of sand and cement and some other additive which will spray to the mold and make the top finish of concrete smooth.

after the first coat, you will go with a cheap brush to let the air bubble out of the face coat.

3- Hand packing.

After 2 coats of the face mix which will be about 1/4″ thick, we will cover it with thick mix of cement, sand, additives, and fiberglass and cover the entire area that will go about 3/4″

4- Curing Time.

Covering the entire mold at the with plastic sheet and then covering with a blanket which make the water don’t escape so quickly and stay within concrete till the concrete get cured within 24 hours.

After finishing one sample work it was time to get our hands dirty and we were working with fabric concrete mix and technique.

Each student had their own fabric and mix to experiment.
